Molluscum Contagiosum Treatment: Natural Healing Molluscum Essential Oil Blend

Many years ago when my oldest was a toddler, she developed what we thought was a rash. There were small whitish or flesh-colored bumps that started under one arm. These few bumps spread rapidly down her side, then on her stomach, behind her knees, to her inner elbows and chest. We saw her pediatrician who told us not to worry, it was molluscum. It is an infection caused by a virus and easily spread. Those with weakened immune systems and children under 12 are most likely to catch it. Here is what it looks like:

molluscum

Touching an infected person or an object that has the virus on it can spread the infection. The virus can spread from one part of the body to another. It commonly spreads in places such as day care or school. The infection is contagious until the bumps are gone. The time from exposure to the virus until the bumps appear usually is 2 to 7 weeks, but it can take up to 6 months. I have no idea where our daughter caught the virus but I did not want to spread it! The poor child spent the next few years in long sleeves and pants year round in Florida!

To prevent molluscum contagiosum from spreading:

  • Try not to scratch.
  • Put a piece of tape or a bandage over the bumps, or wear clothing that covers the bumps
  • Do not share towels or washcloths, or bathe or swim with others.
  • If the bumps are on your face, don’t shave.

Now, if your doctor is like most, as ours was, they will most likely tell you there is not much that can be done and not to worry, it will go away on its own over time, about 6-9 months. Or you also can try:

  • Freezing the bumps, called cryotherapy
  • Scraping off the bumps, called curettage.
  • Putting a chemical on the bumps, like cantharidin or potassium hydrochloride.
  • Using medicines (liquids or creams), such as those used to treat warts

After two years of having molluscum, and it not going away, we saw a dermatologist. He told us the best way to get rid of the virus faster was to nick the bumps with a razor. Um, NO, not on a 3 year old! It was at this point I started looking at alternative ways to alleviate the symptoms. Our pediatrician laughed when I told her what I was going to try, but praise the Lord, it worked! And in a matter of a couple weeks!

I have since told friends about what we used and they have had success as well. When our  second child was a few months old, I saw the first few bumps of molluscum on him. This time I was prepared and immediately started to mend him and it was gone within weeks. The main ingredient we found to help was Melaleuca essential oil (Tea Tree oil).

*You can order this blend from me at my Etsy store

Skin Mending Essential Oil Blend

5 drops Melaleuca Essential Oil: Tea tree oil is useful for cleaning the body and the blood from the unwanted attacks.

5 drops Oregano Essential Oil: It can be helpful for the immune system. It can also be used to target yeast as well as parasites. It will make unfriendly conditions for pathogens.

5 drops Frankincense Essential Oil: One of my most used oils, it is useful for skin issues. It is also useful for promoting the healthy immune system.

In a 10 ml roller bottle, mix the above oils and then add Fractionated Coconut Oil to fill the remainder of the bottle. Apply three times a day on bumps. You can also make this mix and put in a small spray bottle and mist it on to bumps if it is a large area. An additional option is to put a little Apple Cider Vinegar and a few drops of the oil blend in a warm bath each night.

My absolute favorite book for Essential Oil recipes and information is The Essential Life!

A friend shared with me that in addition to this, she gave her child a Tagamet once a day. You can grind it up and mix with a drink if your child can not swallow a pill yet. I have not personally tried this and be sure to check with your doctor about dosage of this medicine for your child’s age and weight.

I also highly recommend adding probiotics into your child’s diet to boost the immune system! DoTerra has an excellent probiotic for adults as well as children, PB Assist!

*Be careful what you put on your body! APRC tested oils from 50 different companies. 95% of those companies tested to be selling ADULTERATED oils. This is a big deal! APRC tested Doterra oils among other companies. They consistently are seeing a massive amount of adulterated oils on the market. Out of 50, only 3 were unadulterated, meaning they truly had PURE oils. One of those three was Doterra, the other two are boutique EO companies at a much higher price. Not all oils are created equal. Please don’t sacrifice your health for something that is cheaper.

  1. I just wanted to say thank you for this post. A year and a half ago my then 2 year old son started to get these bumps. I tried everything and was giving up. However being an EO user myself I started researching and found your story. I immediately gave your blend a try and, oh my gosh, it worked wonders. It cleared them up in a few weeks. Today he still might get an occasional bump but I quickly put on his “bump juice” and they clear up quite quickly. So thank you, thank you for helping this mama out during a stressful time.

    • That makes me so happy to hear!!! Thank you for sharing your success story! It is so frustrating to be told there is nothing that can help when there really is, and it is natural! This made my day!
